Now that we have the important topic open and shut, let us to business. Literally.
Since joining these forums many moons ago in their original incarnation, I have been acutely aware of the abundance of literary and linguistic talent
that inhabits these forums both actively and (like myself) less so. But perhaps I should backtrack a couple of steps first.
I have had a project in the pipeline for a long while now. It was in a 'beta' stage for roughly two years and has been dormant for the past one. This
project was originally called 'The Public Opinion' (http://www.thepublicopinion.org) and had a satisfactorily successful beta run. TPO, as it came to be known by the beta testers, was an online
journalism site, hand-coded from the ground up which allowed people to register on the forums and post articles of interest in a wide variety of topic
areas which would then automatically appear in a contents listing complete with their own page and permalink. Authors and contributors could get
immediate feedback on their work through a comments and ratings system that allowed direct interaction with readers both on the forums and the site
proper.
TPO's limited run allowed me to gather the necessary data to further the project behind closed doors and since then, during what little free time I
have had, I have nurtured the project and modified it in different ways. Today, the spiritual offspring of TPO stands proudly online as my personal
blog, located at http://www.alexboni.net.
Having tinkered with TPO enough now to be happy enough with it to start considering a full public run, I'm reaching the point at which I can start
looking beyond my hard disk and turning my attention to the Internetz. This, my grammatically superior peers, is where you come in...
Based on data gathered from the TPO beta, it is quite feasible to run a project of the same vein and provide something in the way of remuneration to
regular contributors which is generated in the form of advertising. The TPO beta not only provided me with useful test data to consider the project as
a serious venture, but also sufficient paychecks from Google to make the time spent financially worth my while. This, it seems, could provide a
revenue stream to serve the regular contributors. After all, everybody is happier when they're getting laid... I mean paid.
However, this kind of opportunity does not just fall into one's lap. It will require contribution and a little shameless plugging here and there to
get the traffic meter moving (and thus the ad revenue meters moving). Not everybody realises what good decent coding and SEO can do for a website's
Google page rank, but nothing moves a site up the listings like a bit of good-ol'-fashioned word of mouth.
For now, the loose archetype for which I am aiming is http://www.alexboni.net, which is heavily geared toward a journalism theme. I am also quite keen on using a Wordpress framework for the site,
simply because it is such a well-made and secure piece of software. Whilst I did enjoy writing TPO from the ground up, there's little point in
expending such resources when there is already more than ample provision of the solution required, n'est-ce pas? With a few tweaks, Wordpress can be
tuned into a fantastic piece of collaborative blogging software (which is essentially what this project is in tres drole Web 2.0 cliche
terminology).
At this point, I am simply looking to gauge interest in such a project. Questions are welcomed, but as some of you may be aware I take to flames like
a firefighter on amphetamines, so try and keep them to a minimum.
PAQ: (Potentially Asked Questions)
Q: I missed TPO before, did you advertise here?
A: No, the beta was by invitation only.
Q: How many participants were there in the beta?
A: Roughly a dozen. Many were invited from a variety of web sites and forums. Two people from these forums were invited and
participated; Soarina (no longer registered) and Brett.
Q: How much would I potentially get paid?
A: This is entirely dependent upon web traffic. More traffic equals more revenue to be distributed to contributors. Note that
webserver and administration costs will not be deducted from revenue. I'm willing to take the project's running costs as a personal expenditure.
Q: How will I know you're not embezzling whatever revenue is made, trying to be like that wonderful man Bernie Madoff?
A: I'm a great believer in transparency. Periodic traffic and revenue statistics will be made privately available to regular
contributors.
Q: Will anybody who posts a few shitty articles get some cash-in-hand?
A: Revenue sharing is only applicable to those who contribute quality work on a regular basis. This isn't a charity.
Q: What's the situation on tax?
A: No idea. I'll look into it.
Q: What will the organisational structure of the administration be like?
A: I'm thinking of a council-type model at present. There will be a fixed number of administrators who partake in the big decisions
on how the site is run, they may be elected by members on a fixed-term basis, selected by a core group of administrators or even be selected by their
predecessors. There will likely also be a subset of administrators who are tasked with moderation of content, possibly a bit of proof-reading and
singling out the intellectually inferior as cannon fodder for the rest of us. The organisational structure will also have a strong influence on the
whatever revenue structure is decided upon too, as these are likely to be the biggest contributors to the site's overall growth and development.
Q: It hurts when I pee, what should I do?
A: Stop peeing.
Q: I partake in sadomasochistic auto-erotica in public places and have already accrued several restraining orders due to my
'lifestyle choices.' Am I normal?
A: ...

I'm interested in this idea. What kinds of articles are going to feature on the site? Anything at all, politics related, just international news?
I'm guessing that I would need a PayPal account if I were to choose to participate regularly.

Well, I'd like to have a broad variety of topics, but I would like to avoid niche areas of journalism such as the difference in tastes and textures of
lead paint and non-lead paint when partying with Warhammer buddies.
But yeah, if you can write it and somebody who isn't your mother will read it, you're good to go I guess!
PayPal would be the easiest and safest method of transferring money. Though if you want to give me all your bank details I Western Union you money
from auntie who died with millions cash for yuo and me share to. Send now!
